When to Spread Effluent: Soil, Season and Pond Levels

Getting the timing right means more nutrients for your pasture or crop, less risk of runoff and a pond with room to spare when the weather turns. Here's how soil moisture, season and pond levels affect when to spread effluent.

Soil moisture

Spread effluent when the soil can soak it up. Waterlogged soil can't absorb effluent, which leads to ponding and runoff, and council rules don't allow spreading on waterlogged soil. Soil with some room to take on moisture holds the nutrients in the root zone where plants can use them. If you're unsure, a simple check is whether water pools in footprints or wheel marks.

Season

  • Spring: Pasture is growing quickly and can use the nutrients, making it a great time to spread as soils dry out.
  • Summer: Good soil conditions for spreading, and effluent adds moisture and nutrients to dry pasture.
  • Autumn: A key time to pump your pond down so you have storage for winter.
  • Winter: Soils are often too wet and pasture growth is slow, so keep spreading to a minimum and rely on pond storage.

For maize and cropping ground, spreading before cultivation or after harvest is often the most practical timing.

Pond levels

Plan pumping so your pond has enough storage for wet periods when you can't spread. Pumping in autumn, before winter rain and calving, gives you room to hold effluent until soils dry out. Stirring the pond before pumping also clears built-up solids and frees up capacity. Read more about effluent pond pumping.

Planning spreading through the year

  • Check your pond level regularly and book pumping before it gets close to full
  • Test your effluent so you know its nitrogen content
  • Track where and how much you've applied so you stay under 150 kg N/ha per year
  • Book ahead for busy times like autumn

Frequently asked questions

Can you spread dairy effluent on wet or sloping paddocks?

Dairy effluent can only be spread on wet or sloping paddocks when ground conditions allow safe application without runoff, ponding or environmental damage.

Paramount Effluent Spreading's umbilical system avoids the need to drive heavy, fully loaded tankers across paddocks, helping reduce soil compaction and wear on farm races.

However, soil moisture, slope, weather conditions and proximity to waterways must all be considered before spreading. Read our guide on when to spread effluent.

We assess conditions before application to help ensure effluent is distributed responsibly and in accordance with applicable Waikato Regional Council requirements.

How far in advance should I book effluent spreading?

We recommend booking dairy effluent spreading in advance, particularly during busy seasonal periods when demand from Waikato dairy farms is high.

Paramount Effluent Spreading provides scheduled effluent pumping and spreading services, with availability dependent on weather, ground conditions and existing bookings.

Planning ahead helps manage pond storage levels, avoid unnecessary pressure on your effluent system and ensure spreading takes place when paddock conditions are suitable. See when to spread effluent.
